CHAPTER 10

One … Two … I counted the rings and allowed the fog of my much-needed sleep to clear, while I waited for Jessica to pick up the telephone extension in her bedroom. I consulted my wristwatch— four and a half hours sleep— that ought to be enough to keep us until night. It was a nice feeling to wake up and find that I still wore my watch— and my pants, too.

It had been daylight by the time we drove wearily into Jessica’s driveway, and after seven by the time we had completed a check of the house to our satisfaction. No bombs, no hidden terrorists.

Now, I was bunked out once again on Jessica's couch listening to her phone wake me up. I rolled stiffly out of my makeshift bed and padded heavily up the stairs to Jessica’s room, planning to wake her up by hitting her on the head with the receiver. I don't like answering the phone in other people's homes, mainly because I never know what to say. “Munroe residence “ or “Ms. Munroe's residence “ would make me sound like some kind of overgrown houseboy, and just a “Hello “ would have been likely to offend one or another of her suitors. That was before, of course. It sure as hell would bother Sandy, now. She answered on the fifth ring. I continued on up, anyway.

The local police had kept us at Taylor's house for several hours, going over and over the details of exactly how one small female, even a former cop, managed to create three corpses out of three living men while her buddy was tied to the bed and without using her hands.

The videotape Pigface had shot helped in that regard but I still would rather have destroyed it. By the time I remembered about that tape, it was too late and, anyway, Jessica would never have agreed to it. She'd been a good, decent cop, which was pretty much the reason she wasn't a cop anymore.

The two cops who answered our call had themselves a field day with the videotape. I didn't think they had to replay it nearly as many times as they did. One was a rookie, a kid, maybe twenty years old. He was a big fellow, about six-foot-four, with rosy cheeks that couldn't possibly see a razor more than once every other day, and he was quite taken with Jessica. He asked her out a couple of times and followed her around the room like Mary's little lamb. It was all she could do to extract from his more experienced partner a receipt for the tape and a promise to lock it away in the evidence storage room.

Now, Jessica's bedroom door was open. She was sitting cross-legged on the bed, the telephone receiver perched on her shoulder. She was nodding and saying mm-hmm and rummaging in her night-table drawer for a paper and pencil. She's one of those people who can't talk on the phone without a paper and pencil.
